[AMA] We're the development team behind Valfaris, a heavy metal infused 2D action-platformer!

Hi everyone!

I’m Stephen, a community manager at Big Sugar, publisher of the recently launched Valfaris!

Today we’re joined by the fantastic development team behind Valfaris, Steel Mantis. They’re on hand to answer any burning questions you may have related to all things Valfaris!

Valfaris is a heavy metal infused 2D action-platformer and the spiritual successor to Unity Awards finalist, Slain: Back From Hell. Brutal combat. Deadly enemies. Stunning pixel art. Savage soundtrack. Get ready to rip the galaxy a new wormhole!

After mysteriously vanishing from galactic charts, the fortress of Valfaris has suddenly reappeared in the orbit of a dying sun. Once a self-contained paradise, the grandiose citadel now plays host to an ever-growing darkness. Therion, a fearless and proud son of Valfaris, returns to his home to uncover the truth of its doomed fate and to challenge the arcane evil at its very heart.

  1. Thanks for creating this brilliant game. The perfect combination of superb artwork, heavy metal music and challenging gameplay. Looking forward to the sequel

  2. At the end of Slain, if I remember correctly, there was a plot twist on the sword that apparently was sentient and was leaving for an intergalactic journey, is Valfaris a direct sequel or is it however set in the same universe of Slain? Thanks!

  3. 🤘 Thank you to /u/nicorage for helping set this AMA up! And a big thank you to Steel Mantis for coming to do this with us! 🤘

  4. Did you all start in game development or did you crossover from other fields? I’m a software developer and I make games after work but I can’t seem to make anything bigger than an arcade game clone. How did you get started. What’s your origin story?

  5. We’re wrapping things up here guys, thanks so much for all the awesome questions!
We may pop back later and see if there’s more Q’s, so feel free to keep asking away 😉

  6. As a huge fan of concept albums, I’d love to see some of them developed into bigger stories and games. Glad to see somebody else paying homage to metal in their craft.

I think “Still Life” by Opeth would make a hell of a dark experience.

  7. Im very excited about this game. Its a shame that it hasn’t been getting way more traction but I’m giddy like a school girl to pick up a physical copy for my Switch. Great OST. Amazing artwork. Good shit
