I brought my Nintendo switch to my mothers house. She has nerve damage in her legs so she cant really leave the house much (stairs). She has complained alot about cabin fever and being bored. Here she is playing Super Mario bros 3 on the SNES app

  1. Yo, when she gets to world 6 level 5, she has to use either a tanooki suit, a P wing, or a leaf to fly through the ceiling above the blocks at the end of the level. There are bricks you have to break while going up on the right side of the tunnel.

  2. Yay! I know it doesnt fix all her problems or really get her out, but I’m glad she is able to find amusement with it.

  3. She would be better off quitting smoking – nicotine contributes to poor circulation and peripheral nerve damage.

  4. Try giving her Stardew Valley… Its a huge time killer and really simple and easy to play! Also its a shit ton of fun and getting free content updates!

  5. Could you get her a staircase elevator thing to help with the stairs, or is she in an apartment? Really nice that you could liven up her life a little like this, she’s lucky to have you 🙂

  6. I have nerve damage on the entire left side of my body from the neck down due to an abscess that grew on my brain stem. Between it and how they had to remove it is what caused the damage. For a while I had a lot of problems walking and general motor skills. I was in rehab for 5 months after the surgery learning to do everything again. To put it in perspective: I spent over 2 weeks relearning how to sit down/get up from a chair and walk up/down stairs because I was so fucked up.

I can’t game for long hours anymore cause it causes too much pain in my hand. I can’t really type well anymore cause I can’t “feel” where my hand is while typing. My handwriting suffered too. Which is bad cause it was already shitty lol. Certain materials give me really weird sensations too. Metal makes my hand burn, denim makes my leg break out in goosebumps. Wood make my hand itchy. I can’t really do long distance walks either. Especially if the walk is very steep or has hills. Steps can still be a challenge too. As can something as simple as a curb. So I totally get it.

Fun fact: when you have nerve damage on your dominate side; it really really fucking sucks.

Pretty much any kind of cardio but a stationary/recumbent bike is pretty much impossible as well

All this said though. 5 years later on most days I barely even notice it and I know my limitations but still try to constantly improve my situation.

It gets better. I promise. Cheers to helping your mom cope and being an awesome kid.

  7. I went straight to Google before hitting the comments. Lesson learned. 10/10 successful catfish.

  8. Wait, what kind of setup is this? I have been out of gaming for a little while now, but thinking about getting back into something. Is she using the Switch or just the controllers? Wireless display?

  9. Super cool. My switch saved me when I broke my right foot. I was banned from driving and nearly went bonkers.

  10. This is what I hope my mom does when she gets older and stays at home more. But in reality she’s probably just gonna read more right wing conspiracy crap and become a 4channer

  11. You are very kind! And Super Mario Bros. 3, my most favorite of all video games in history not even Pokemon will over take it!

  12. Similar story: I have a friend who has fibromyalgia, crazy death allergies, and other random medical crap to deal with. She’s medically disabled, can’t work, and is just shy of being a shut-in. Several of us pooled money and built her a VR rig so she could do things virtually that she couldn’t do in reality.

Probably kept the boredom from driving her crazy.

  13. Boredom is honestly such a horrible thing. I’m glad you’re doing something to alleviate hers. Does she usually play video games? Think you can indoctrinate her?

  14. The first time I read it, I thought it said “she had the nerve to damage her legs falling down the stairs”

  15. My mom has been gaming with me since Ecco: The Tides of Time, but she’s had cancer for 8 years and is now basically immobile. She also plays everything I do, even rather difficult games like Dark Souls (she’s terrible at them, but is a great real life example of “the tortoise and the hare.”) Lately she’s gotten super-addicted to Minecraft again. x.x Which now my three year old son Link is finally old enough to start enjoying, so it’s been a whole exciting process of bringing more family members into the fold!

I also wanted to add that one of my fellow “gamer girl” friends has fibro myalgia and whenever that knocks her out she’ll obsessively play one game for days at a time. Video games are sanity-savers for the differently abled.

  16. No, it only includes NES, for now anyway:

Nintendo Online emulator actually has a couple different emulator cores in it, which includes SNES (No games included, yet.). The developer linked below was able to rip the NES app from Switch and found data that correlates to SNES being implemented.

  17. Jesus the amount of pills on the table. Those can’t all be for just nerve damage because thats crazy.

  18. Just an FYI, you can set this up on her phone with all the games for a few bucks (plus other emulators for different systems), and most android phones have OTG so you can just plug in any usb controller. That way she can always play without needing your switch

  19. just told my mom to play video games instead of me keeping her company. epic win 😎😎😎 upvotes to the left
