  1. Souls is just a little challenging. You can make it easier as well. Older games had to deal with quarters or rentals. They were designed to kill you ASAP to get more money. So I would say yes games were much harder in the past.

  2. I’m out of the loop. What’s the thing about OK, Boomer I keep seeing? Is it just a dumb meme, or did something happen?

  3. Kung-fu for the NES is insanely hard. Took a good 10 tries just to get through the 1st level. A lot of NES games were hard as hell back in the day. The phrase “Nintendo hard” is a thing.

  4. “Dark Souls is hard!” was born out of an environment of games that coddle the player. Put it back in the 3rd or 4th generation and its difficulty is nothing special.

  5. The souls games are only hard until you learn them. Roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, swing, roll, roll, roll, roll, swing, repeat until the boss is 3 swings from death. Get greedy, roll, roll roll, roll, swing, swing, you have died, FUUUUUUUUU-

  6. What? Dark Souls isn’t even that hard. It’s punishing, but once you learn it it can become a cakewalk. I’m willing to bet a pretty massive chunk of the NES library has never been beaten because it’s total fuckery.

Edit: Just looked it up, and it turns out every single licensed NES game has been beaten. One dude actually beat them all himself, Piotr Delgado “The Mexican Runner” Kusielczuk. In order to beat a piano teaching game, he had to learn piano to do it. I was thinking that there are some random games nobody has ever heard of that was literally impossible due to a bug or humanly impossible jump or something, but looks like I was wrong.

  7. Go try to beat Zelda 2, Ninja Gaiden, and Super Ghouls and Ghosts, then report back about how hard Dark Souls is.

  8. You can keep using Dark Souls as a “see, video games can be hard now days”

But the using 1% made by one studio when back in the day nearly all the video games were hard mode is ridiculous. just watch 5 random Angry Video Game Nerd episodes. Nintendo games were impossible if you were a kid, yet they were made for kids. Only the teenagers could beat them. Even then, only the nerdiest of the nerds could beat them. I remember not being able to make it past 90% of the games I played. Streets of Rage was probably the only sega game I ever beat by myself.

Games are much better today for sure though. Like…by far.

  9. If you played Doom as a kid, you were a millennial. No where close to a boomer. Boomers didn’t have video games.
